How to Make Your TikTok Account Private (2026 Guide)

Switch your TikTok to private in a few taps, understand what changes, and fine-tune who can comment, Duet, Stitch and message you.

A private TikTok account means you decide who gets to watch your videos. Instead of anyone on the app seeing your posts, people have to request to follow you, and you approve or decline each request.

This guide shows how to make your TikTok account private, what changes once you do, and the other privacy settings that matter just as much: who can comment, Duet, Stitch and message you, how to hide your following list, how to remove followers, and how TikTok handles teen accounts and Family Pairing. Menus change between app versions, so if a label in your app differs slightly, look for the nearest match.

How do you make your TikTok account private?

Go to Profile → Menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → Privacy and turn on Private account. The change takes effect right away.

  1. Tap Profile at the bottom right.
  2. Tap the menu icon (three lines) at the top right.
  3. Choose Settings and privacy.
  4. Tap Privacy.
  5. Switch on Private account and confirm if asked.

To go public again, follow the same steps and switch the toggle off. Pending follow requests appear in your inbox, where you can approve or decline each one.

If the toggle is missing or greyed out, you may be on a Business account. TikTok Business accounts are designed to be public, so you’d need to switch back to a personal account first, which can affect features such as the commercial music library.

Private vs public TikTok account: what changes?

With a private account, only followers you approve can watch your videos and see your likes or reposts. With a public account, anyone on or off TikTok can view your content.

FeaturePublic accountPrivate account

Profile visibilityFull profile visibleOthers still see your name, photo, bio and counts
Duet, Stitch and downloads by othersControlled by your settingsHeavily limited; TikTok restricts these on private videos
Growth and discoveryVideos can reach the For You feedReach is limited to your approved followers

Two things often surprise people. First, existing followers stay when you go private; going private doesn’t remove anyone. Second, your username, profile photo and bio are still visible to people who find you, so keep personal details out of your bio.

If you’re trying to grow, a private account works against you, because new viewers can’t watch your posts. Our guides on how to get followers on TikTok and how the TikTok algorithm works explain why public reach matters for growth.

How to remove followers after going private

Open your Followers list, tap the three dots (or “…”) next to the person and choose Remove. They won’t be notified, and on a private account they’ll have to request again to see your videos.

  1. Go to your profile and tap Followers.
  2. Find the account you want to remove.
  3. Tap the “…” or options button next to their name.
  4. Tap Remove and confirm.

This is the step most people forget. If you went private to keep someone specific away from your content, removing them as a follower is what actually locks them out. If you want no contact at all, including messages, block them instead. See how to block someone on TikTok.

Who can comment, Duet, Stitch and message you?

Each interaction has its own setting under Settings and privacy → Privacy, separate from the private-account toggle. You can usually choose between everyone, followers or friends (people you follow back), and no one.

  • Comments. Choose who can comment and switch on filters for spam, offensive words or custom keywords.
  • Duet and Stitch. Decide whether other people can remix your videos. You can also change this on individual videos.
  • Direct messages. Limit DMs to friends or turn them off.
  • Mentions and tags. Control who can @mention you or tag you in videos.
  • Downloads. Stop other people from saving your videos.
  • Suggest your account to others. Turn off suggestions to contacts, Facebook friends or people with mutual connections.

How to hide your following list and liked videos

Under Settings and privacy → Privacy, set Following list to Only me. Use the Liked videos (and, where shown, favourites or reposts) settings to keep those private too.

Hiding your following list stops other people from browsing the accounts you follow. That’s useful if you follow friends or family who prefer not to be connected to your account in public. Your follower and following counts usually remain visible, but the list itself is hidden.

Also check Profile views and post view history settings while you’re there. They control whether people can see that you viewed their profile or videos. Our guide on how to see who viewed your TikTok explains how those work.

TikTok privacy settings for teens

TikTok applies stricter defaults to younger users. Accounts registered as under 16 are set to private by default, and several features, such as direct messaging, are not available to them.

TikTok has described these protections for younger users:

  • Private by default for accounts aged 13 to 15.
  • No direct messages for users under 16.
  • Limited Duet, Stitch and downloads for younger users’ videos.
  • No hosting LIVE for users under 18.
  • Default screen-time reminders for younger users.

Age rules and defaults differ by country and change over time, so check TikTok’s Safety Center or the in-app settings for the current rules where you live. Never enter a false age to unlock features. Doing so can lead to the account being restricted or removed.

What is TikTok Family Pairing?

Family Pairing links a parent or guardian’s TikTok account to a teen’s account so the adult can manage key settings, such as screen time, content filters and who can message or comment.

  1. Both people need a TikTok account.
  2. On the parent’s phone, open Settings and privacy → Family Pairing and choose Parent.
  3. On the teen’s phone, open the same menu, choose Teen, and scan the QR code shown on the parent’s phone.
  4. Choose which settings to manage.

The exact controls available grow over time and differ by region, so review what’s listed when you set it up. Family Pairing works best as a conversation, not a secret. Explain to your teen what you’re turning on and why.

Should creators keep a private TikTok account?

Usually not. If you want to grow or go LIVE to new viewers, a public account is the better choice. Protect yourself with targeted controls instead of locking everything down.

A practical middle ground for creators:

  • Keep the account public, but limit DMs to friends.
  • Turn on spam and offensive comment filters and add custom keywords.
  • Hide your following list.
  • Use moderators and keyword filters on LIVE.
  • Keep a separate private account for personal posts if you want one.

On LIVE, a busy, structured chat helps too. When viewers are playing a comment game such as Voting Arena, most comments are on-topic, which makes moderation easier. Our TikTok LIVE tips for small creators go deeper on building a friendly room.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when you make your TikTok account private?

Only followers you approve can watch your videos. New followers must send a request, which you can approve or decline. Your existing followers stay unless you remove them.

Can people still see my profile if my TikTok is private?

Yes. People can still see your username, profile photo, bio and follower counts. They can’t watch your videos unless you approve them as a follower.

Why can’t I make my TikTok account private?

The most common reason is a Business account, which is designed to be public. Switch to a personal account first, then turn on Private account under Settings and privacy, then Privacy.

Does a private TikTok account remove existing followers?

No. Going private keeps your current followers. Remove anyone you don’t want watching from your Followers list.

Can I hide who I follow on TikTok?

Yes. In Settings and privacy, then Privacy, set Following list to Only me.

Are TikTok accounts for under-16s private by default?

Yes. TikTok sets accounts registered as 13 to 15 years old to private by default and limits features such as direct messages for younger users. Rules vary by country.

Can a private TikTok account go viral?

Not in the usual sense. Videos on a private account are only shown to approved followers, so they can’t reach the wider For You feed.
